I have served as a strong, independent voice for the students of the Berryessa School District since my election to the board in 2006. I believe it is important for a board member to be accessible to all constituents, and have therefore made regular visits to every school in the district, listening to teachers, administrators, and parents in order to gain insight in how things are working. Our district has survived California's budget crisis relatively well, avoiding teacher layoffs through the 2009-2010 year and improving student performance every year.

Communication with residents of Berryessa and district employees is paramount. I started a President's Blog in order to publicly explain and discuss issues the district is facing and solicit feedback on the choices we are considering.

During my tenure on the board, the district has been successful in several areas:

  • Test scores are up every year. 11 of our 13 schools now score above 800 on the Academic Performace Index.
  • Three schools have been added to the list of California Distinguished Schools.
  • The budget has been balanced each year. The district has received positive certification and has had no audit exceptions.

    I have worked hard for the students of the Berryesssa School District:

  • I fought for the preservation of counselors at the middle schools, making sure that vulnerable students have the support services they need.
  • I ensured that budget cuts have been kept as far away from the classroom as possible and made sure that district administration has remained as lean as possible.
  • I led the effort to place a parcel tax measure (Measure W) on the ballot in 2008. I helped coordinate the campaign to pass Measure W, which now provides $1.7 million annually to the district.
  • I have met regularly with our state legislators to make sure they know how their budget decisions affect our students and to demand flexibility in how we spend our scarce budget dollars.
  • I have initiated conversations with neighboring districts and the East Side High School District about how to better coordinate with one another and make sure that education is articulated from kindergarten through high school.
  • I support policies that will make our school district more environmentally friendly. Our energy costs have been reduced and we are working to introduce solar power.

    I have provided steady leadership on the board. My fellow board members have recognized my value by electing me an officer on the board each of my 4 years. I served as clerk in 2007, vice president in 2008, and president in both 2009 and 2010.
